1. Documentation and registration
As an EU citizen, you have the right to work in Spain without a visa. But you must register correctly:
- Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la UE: Required for stays over 90 days.
- NIE number: Used in all tax and administrative matters.
The green NIE gives access to work, the health system and social benefits.
2. Social security and Seguridad Social
Before you start paid work, you must be registered in the Spanish social security system: Seguridad Social.
You and your employer pay cotizaciones sociales, which cover:
- Public health care
- Unemployment and maternity
- Pension and disability
- Family benefits
Your share: approx. 6.35% of gross salary. Employer: approx. 30%.
3. Right to unemployment benefits (paro)
You can get paro if:
- You are involuntarily unemployed
- Have paid contributions for min. 360 days over 6 years
- Are registered with SEPE as job seeker
- Have legal residence in Spain
4. Basic rights as an employee
As an employee, you have the right to, among other things:
- Registered employment contract
- Vacation, breaks and holidays
- Professional representation
- Protection against wrongful dismissal
- Free access to labor courts
5. Working as self-employed (autónomo)
To work as a freelancer or business owner, you must:
- Register with Hacienda and Seguridad Social
- Pay a fixed monthly fee (approx. 230 € in 2025)
- Report income quarterly
- Contribute to social benefits such as cese de actividad
